Athens, Attica, Greece (1987 – present)

Rotting Christ is a Greek band formed in Athens, Attica, Greece in 1987. They are noted for being one of the first black metal bands within this region. During their rehearsal era in the late 1980s, the band began as grindcore, but quickly shifted to playing black metal with a distinctive touch.
Despite the name, the band’s traditional lyrical themes involving evil and occultism has evolved into a more “mystic” path, and they have modified their musical direction on each album, utilizing elements such as clean melodic baritone vocals, doom, gothic metal and industrial music traits, and male/female Benedictine chants. Recent albums, beginning with Khronos, have shown the band taking a more modern, faster and more aggressive approach to their blackened-gothic style. Their 2007 album, Theogonia, especially, has been described as more “atmospheric” and “epic”.

In the beginning of the 90’s the members of Rotting Christ (which were now using pseudonyms such as Necromayhem (Sakis), Mutilator (Jim), Necrosauron or Sauron (Themis), typical for that era) fully dedicated themselves to the band. Greek label Decapitated Records (later known as Unisound Records) circulated their first mini-LP, the legendary “Passage To Arcturo” originally on vinyl. Magus Wampyr Daoloth from Necromantia was added on keyboards. The result was 6 masterfully played black/death metal tracks. Here we begin to see the elements that will characterize Rotting Christ’s personal style in the years to come as well as that occult spirit which is reminiscent of their first recordings.

Sanctus Diavolos and Theogonia are both fantastic albums. I really like their first three as well, which was really cool melodic-yet-riffy black metal similar to Varathron. Cool shit. I somewhat liked Aealo as well, but it got a little over-the-top with the folky themes and the metal quality suffered as a result I think. I couldn't really get into the middle stuff though. They weren't bad albums, but I just found from A Dead Poem onward to get a bit boring. Triarchy of the Lost Lovers started it a bit, but still retained the heaviness and solid riffing.

Every single f..cking album has tracks that i love. Rotting Christ is my favorite black metal band hands down! Their best album is Non Serviam....the 2006 Remaster is an absolute eargasm...not that all the others that followed (especially their latest one) or the ones that were released before it (Passage To Arcturo..etc) didn't give me goosebumbs.... ;) And the Grammy goes to........\\m/ Rotting Christ - Where Mortals Have No Pride \\m/
