Roland Orzabal is a British-born singer-songwriter and guitarist, known most famously as one half of the internationally popular outfit Tears for Fears (in fact trading under the name himself via their ‘Elemental’ and ‘Raoul and the Kings of Spain’). He has released one solo album to date, ‘Tomcats Screaming Outside’, which also bred the single ‘Low Life’ - neither managing to chart in the UK, despite being open to critical praise.

As Tears for Fears have been experiencing a comeback following both the phenomenal success of Michael Andrews and Gary Jules’ rendition of their New Wave hit ‘PlayMad World’ and a surprise reunion in 2003, it is unknown at present whether Orzabal plans to record or release any more solo material in the near future.

He is also known for having his own recording studio, ‘Neptune’s Kitchen’, built into his home.

Wow, I had forgotten how amazing his solo Tomcats album is. Had not listened in a dog's age.

Tomcats is my most treasured album of all-time. My scrobbles don't prove that, but if we could have done scrobbles from our CD player back in the day, this album would take the cake. I fell asleep to it every single night. <3

If Roland wrote another solo-record that had the same vibe as the tune "Maybe Our Days Are Numbered", I would never listen to another band or record for the rest of my life.

I agree with liztener2008 here. Roland is, undeniably, the more obviously talented of the two, in the sense that he is the one we identify with as the inspired, creative genius, and like many others I have always admired his vocal/writing prowess. But isn't it always the way with pop groups that when the front man goes it alone -- listening, perhaps, to too many people flattering their ego and telling them they are the one that really matters -- that something is lost. Front man, song writer, lead singer... Yes, all of these. And immensely talented. But it's never the whole story. Maybe every Sherlock needs a Watson, every Hardy needs a Laurel, someone that provides balance and makes sense of them, anchors them somehow. I'm not saying I don't like Rolands solo work. I do. But as has been noted, the TFF chemistry is just that bit more somehow...

The remake of Mad World is just simply gorgeous, and poignant, and reveals the real artistry of this person....shame it was not more obvious to people in the past.

My two cents & just my opinion: Roland is, for the most part, a brilliant & vastly underrated songwriter. Not always great but, he's hit the mark more than enough times. Even the songs I don't care for usually have terrific lyrics. I don't think many out there can top him lyrically. Of the two (Curt & Roland), Roland has always been my fave. I prefer him solo and prefer his voice. However, I think Curt deserves more credit than he gets. TFF together have a special and interesting chemistry. You can't say that Curt has no part in that. It's not just Roland hauling the load. Also, I have really come to see Curt as a brilliant bassist. Both are tremendous musicians and great together. Love them both. Love TFF. Love that they got back together. Hope they do it again.

Roland is the real genius behind Tears for Fears. I wish I could write songs like that guy.

Sorry Kamila_C, I think Curt solo is soup. I agree with nixhex4311, though I still think that 1) most casual TFF listeners don't even know who Orzabal is, 2) TSO could even be tagged Electro. It is the consecration of a decade of experimentation (the TFF album ELAHE is so dull and mellow in comparison...).

Greatest tonal quality of voice to come out of the 80's. His solo album is completely under rated because he didn't use the tears for fears name (in spite of the fact that the last 2 to 3 albums were strictly Roland.) It is hard to find, but you MUST have it if you love tears for fears.
