The popular Metal music radio show Metalenema began in 1994 on KVRX 91.7 FM in Austin, Texas. Hosted by The Undertaker (not the WWF/WWE wrestler of the same name) and Agapornis Epicac, it was the only radio show broadcast from The University of Texas that received press coverage in The Daily Texan, Austin Chronicle, and The Austin American Statesman, and boasted hundreds of listeners at the height of its popularity. The format of the show is Speed, Black, and Death Metal spanning the 80s, 90s, and the new millennium, but its hallmark is the infectious humor and interplay between the two personalities as featured in the spoken segments between blocks of songs. The approach has been described as “if Loveline played Slayer”.
The show initially went inactive in 1997 when the duo was abruptly dismissed from KVRX by new management. Their final broadcast was infamous due to the fact that The Undertaker and Agapornis refused to play music and instead allowed fans to call in and speak out on the air regarding the cancellation. This episode has the distinction of violating every single FCC regulation on record at the time including unmitigated profanity, calls to action, and the broadcast of caller’s voices on air without their express permission. Subsequently, the show’s notoriety and acclaim led them to record a handful of broadcasts for Bridgwater’s 107.4 BCR FM in Bridgwater, England, and the now defunct KCUF Radio.
