Biography

There are multiple artists with this name:

1) Magma is the French brain-child of drummer/composer Christian Vander formed in Paris in 1969, disbanded in 1983 and reformed in 1996. Starting with a base of experimental rock heavily influenced by jazz and 20th century classical music, the band developed such a unique style of progressive rock that it became a new genre called . Characterized by insistent and repetitive rhythms, dramatic vocals, virtuosic solos, heavy bass playing, and jazzy drums, Zeuhl has been emulated by numerous followers from all over the world.

Much of Magma’s music is written in the constructed language known as “Kobaïan” and concerns a lengthy saga about Earth and the planet Kobaïa, with spiritual and environmental themes.
Musician John Lydon (of Public Image Ltd. and Sex Pistols fame) is known to have been a big fan, even seeing the group in concert.

2) Magma is a modern thrash metal band from Belgrade, Serbia. They are a famous underground Serbian demo band, and they recorded their first album, and now looking for label.

3) Magma is a progressive folk group from Argentina. The music retains strong Andean influences and is notable for incorporating the flutes of the region. Their output is notable for meshing the Andean elements with Spanish folk guitar and the adoption of European song structures and instrumentation. Extended prog and folk songs see the use of both Mellotron and pan flutes. Despite being an 1980s outfit, their music is reminiscent of 70s progressive rock and 60s/70s folk. Truly a great example of music transculturation on various levels.

I suppose you can like them without 'listening' to them, feeling the power and emotion overwhelming you and sweeping you away; you may not be 'listening' to them, but you're surely 'hearing' them, which is something in itself. To pu it another way, you may not understand it (ok, the obvious part is the Kobaiian lyrics) but you can certainly dig it. I'm not even sure Christian Vander himself understands the extent of Magma's power all of the time, but to watch him play you can see he is digging it.

I am hoping that while they are actively touring they might see fit to visit England. Please?

I applaud your attempt at making a shout here with some actual content and depth to it, and I agree with you to a large extent, but I think that quote about liking them while not listening, though mostly meant as a joke, is not necessarily just a hipster thing. It is possible to really like the idea of a band more than their music itself. That being said, I love Magma.

"I like them the most when I'm not listening to them."? How ridiculous. Incidentally, it is so unduly dismissive to use the critical nomenclature that immediately puts the group at an inaccessible remove from those wishing to discover them - witness such spurious, nongermane trash as "Klingon opera" and any superlative + "weird"/"bizarre"/"insane"/"maniacal", etc. Magma are *unusual* only in that they are absolutely, uncompromisingly unique, and consequently there is NO-ONE like them, nobody can even emulate them accurately (though their various progenies and those who took it upon themselves to mutate the zeuhl style are typically amazing groups in themselves, provided they aren't merely imitators). I'll say this much. "Köhntarkösz" is THE most emotionally powerful and beguiling and utterly flawless composition I've ever come across in a decade of perusing "out there" and progressive music. In particular, last night the "Live/Hhaï" rendition had me in tears, its divine beauty is such.
