Biography

Jomanda was a female House/R&B vocal trio from New Jersey. Members were Joanne Thomas, Cheri Williams and Renee Washington. They debuted in 1986 with the song “On Top (Of The Groove)” and followed it up with a couple other one-off house singles. Their first major dance hit was “Make My Body Rock”, originally released in 1988 on Big Beat Records. They followed this with several hits on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart during the late 1980s and early 1990s, including “Got a Love for You,” which hit number one in 1991. It also crossed over to the mainstream, going top 40 (peaking at number 40) on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. They released their debut album Someone To Love Me in 1990.

In 1993 they released their follow-up album, Nubia Soul, which was much more R&B flavoured. The album also produced a few minor dance and R&B hits, with “I Like It” reaching number 83 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. That same year, Jomanda returned to number one on the dance chart with “Don’t You Want Me,” credited to Felix featuring Jomanda, a techno number that used vocal samples from their 1989 hit “Don’t You Want My Love”.

In 1995, member Joanne Thomas returned to the dance charts under the moniker Yavahn as the featured vocalist on the Ruffneck song “Everybody Be Somebody”. Cheri Williams had appeared on a Ruffneck track as well in 1987. Yavahn released several more singles with Ruffneck over the next few years, as well as the album New Life in 1999.
