John Hornak is a composer, engineer and guitarist exploring the genre’s of Dub and Ambient. Creating and programming custom synthesizers and instruments to achive a unique tone and sound inspired by the early Dub pioneers (King Tubby, Jackie Mittoo, Lee “Scratch” Perry). Working as a recording engineer and producer for the past 15 years. John forged his skills working with some of Canada’s top talent, including Brendan Mcguire (Sloan, Feist), Ras Bagel (Jackie Mittoo) and Ellis Hall (E3, Redman)

“Songs Carved Of Wood”, was Hornak’s first solo album. Started in 2004 the record was eventually completed 4 years later. The sessions were recorded in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa ending with a pilgrimage to western Canada. Songs Carved Of Wood is divided in four parts Seed, Sprout, Driftwood and Boreal. The exposition of a single idea, encompassing acoustic and synthesized styles ranging from folk to dub. It was released exclusively online at woodsongs.ca on January 10 2008 and has been downloaded thousands of times, in countries all over the world.

A Needle, A Feather And A Rope, The latest album by John Hornak, is a recollection of his travels in sound. From Prague, John journeyed through Eastern Europe, Morocco and Spain, constantly recording and composing small melodies.

The opening track (Hlavna Stanica) is an ode to Bratislava played on solo piano. “Jemma El Fna”, track 6, is an aural memory of the famous Moroccan Market.
