Biography

James Ferraro is an experimental musician from Rochester, New York, currently based in Venice Beach, California U.S.A. He is one half of both The Skaters and Lamborghini Crystal.
His solo work spans a vast range of thematic and musical motifs and early in his career was often quite DIY in aesthetic: it had a generally lo-fi sound, and was issued in incredibly small quantities on his own labels on cheaper to manufacture formats like cassette and CD-R. The music itself generally made some commentary on contemporary society; a particular emphasis was placed on recontextualizing the more garish aspects of the 90s, ideas surrounding precession of simulacra as well as relating art to supercorporations and mass media.
After releasing dozens of albums (some of which were reissued on the higher profile Olde English Spelling Bee) and attaining something of a cult following in the three-year period spanning 2008-2010, he released the album Far Side Virtual on Hippos In Tanks in 2011, which was met with much acclaim from the mainstream music press, making multiple end-of-year lists and putting Ferraro into the public eye. The album displayed a sidestep musically into the realms of MIDI arrangements and crystal-clear fidelity, falling more in line with the ideals of his original DIY work.
Around the time of the release of this album, Ferraro collaborated with several other musicians as part of the FRKWYS project (see Borden, Ferraro, Godin, Halo & Lopatin) and has since completed a multimedia work for MoMA PS1, 100%.
