Grails are an American instrumental rock band from Portland, Oregon.
Initially the band ‘Laurel Canyon’ formed to play one show on a whim. In 2003 the band changed its name to Grails, just before the release of their first full-length album. They adopted a louder, more aggressive style, often switching instruments with each member writing songs that saw them branching out to increasingly disparate styles. They live in Portland but rarely play live in their hometown.
The group produced two releases while signed to Neurot Recordings - The Burden of Hope and Redlight. Additionally, they recorded the album Black Tar Prophecy, a collection of earlier EPs, for the Important Records label in Massachusetts. In 2006, they signed with indie label Temporary Residence Limited, who released their current album, titled Burning Off Impurities in March 2007.
In March 2008 it was announced that Emil Amos joined OM and a new Grails record called Take Refuge In Clean Living was released May 13th on Important Records. Their latest album, “Doomsdayer’s Holiday” was released on October 7th, on Temporary Residence Limited.

all of their stuff takes time to sink into. I still find new stuff in each song every time I listen. burning off impurities and black tar prophecies are very similar in style, at least in my eyes. I'll be honest though, I'm not a huge fan of their older, more generic post-rock style (as in pre-black tar/three interpretations days).
