Biography

Chad Valley – the alias of Hugo Manuel – is part of the same Oxford collective Jonquil, Blessing Force, that Fixers belong to, and there is a similar feeling of 60s music being given a shimmery modern electronic makeover. But maybe because there’s just one of him he is able to give the project greater focus; there is no dilution, or sense of boxes being ticked, with Chad Valley – it’s just one idea, gloriously stretched out over four tracks on his sublime self-titled debut EP; one long wave of luxuriant sound after another.

I'm guessing Young Hunger got crap reviews because, rather than transforming 80s pop into something transcendent and contemporary like his older material did, it merely sought to replicate it identically. Disappointing for me, not only because I was crazy about Equatorial Ultravox and its lo-fi dreaminess, but also because I'm a fan of a lot of the featured vocalists (Active Child and Glasser). It's fitting that the record opens featuring Twin Shadow, contemporary indie music's cheesiest synthpop failure. I will concede, however, that Fathering/Mothering is a solid track, though sadly not enough to be the LP's saving grace.
