Kiedis was born in Michigan on November 1st 1962 to parents John Michael Kiedis (later to become actor Blackie Dammett) and Peggy Nobel. After his parents split he moved to Hollywood with his father aged twelve. At this time he featured in several films under the psydenoum Cole Dammett, most notably as Sylvester Stalones son in the film F.I.S.T. Kiedis began smoking cannabis aged 11 and by the end of his teens had moved onto harder drugs, supplied by his father who was, at that time, a drug dealer.
Kiedis attended Fairfax High School which is where he met Balzary, along with guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons. The four of them would go on to form the Red Hot Chili Peppers, starting as a joke band known as Tony Flow & The Miraculous Masters of Mayhem. During this time Kiedis’ and Slovak’s drug use began to spiral and in 1988, after a tour of Europe, Slovak was found dead. Kiedis did not attend the funeral.
Kiedis went clean following this, but his demons returned in the mid-90s as he, again, fell back onto drugs. This was a result of taking a painkiller after having his wisdom teeth removed. In modern times, Kiedis claims to no longer take drugs.
