Description
There’s something moving and otherworldly about Julia Holter. After graduating from California Institute of the Arts with a degree in composition, the LA native began releasing CD-Rs of her own bedroom recorded work. Her full-length studio debut, Tragedy, was warmly received, but it was with Ekstasis in 2012 that Holter hit brilliant new heights that seemed out of the grasp of others. Critics fell in love: Pitchfork gave it a Best New Music 8.6, calling it 'both haunting and life-affirming, something to make you dream and think'; The Guardian awarded 8/10, commenting 'The more time you spend with it, the more its structures make sense, the more the melodies begin to sparkle'; and the Quietius gave another 8, stating simply 'Ekstasis is ecstatically good'.
Third album Loud City Song will be Julia's first for Domino Recordings, her new label. The writing process for this LP began even before her first album, and was co-produced with long-time collaborator Cole Marsden Greif-Neill of Nite Jewel/Haunted Graffiti. Inspired by the novel Gigi and her relationship with her hometown, early reviews of the album and the tracks premiered so far suggest that this should be yet another step up for one this wonderfully challenging young artist.
