Wiki

The or tags describe the type of hip-hop prevalent in and around the West Coast of the United States (mainly Los Angeles and the Bay Area) from 1978-1986. (See Old School West Coast Hip-Hop for more about this movement.) In 1986, the sound changed from , which dominated the old school west coast, to . The first old school release was a joint recording by Disco Daddy & Captain Rapp on Duffy Hooks III's Rappers Rapp Disco Co. label, 1981's "The Gigolo Rapp." On the west coast, Disco Daddy, Captain Rapp, Uncle Jamm's Army, King M.C., Rappers Rapp Group, World Class Wreckin' Cru, Knights Of The Turntables, Chris "The Glove" Taylor, Rich Cason and the Galactic Orchestra (also see Rich Cason), and DJ Tracy (Ice T) were some of the first west coast hip hop acts. The west coast was noted for its style and sound, and a focus on popping and locking and boogaloo, during this time period. The Golden Age of Rap, from 1986-1989, succeeded this movement, and some would argue that the west coast, via Ice T and his "In The Morning" release founded the new "" movement, along with the Philly based Schoolly D.
