Nikki was born on the southside of Chicago to German Jewish immigrant parents. She grew up in the Evanston school district part of Skokie - proud to be an "Okie from Skokie".She started writing songs at age 7 - was classically trained in piano, voice and music theory by Max Krealoff. From 9-11 she sang at organizations banquet dinners. She had an offer from Chess records when she had just turned 14. She won the Chicago's Everything Music Guide Songwriting contest in 1985.
