Biography
Mixtapes & Meltdowns is the musical experimentation of 26-year-old Laurie.
Growing up in Florida, the music of Laurie's childhood was the whir of an old Singer lockstitch machine, the rat-a-tat-tat of a grommeter. She spent many a summer day in her father’s dusty shop, climbing on boxes of canvas tarpaulins and making up silly songs, singing them into an old tape recorder.
As a teenager, Laurie attended a magnet high school for the arts where she explored theater, creative writing, and dance. But after graduation, she mistakenly thought it was time to be a "grown up" and left her creative exploits behind for seven years of college and corporate office work. This all felt wrong to her, but it took a semester in law school at NYU to finally wake up and realize that she was on the wrong path entirely. At 25, Laurie quit law school and left New York for a rambling lakeside house in the Midwest where she currently makes silly music and works as a freelance writer and photo editor.
