The William Tell Routine formed in 2000. Original members included bass player Cory Schnaufer, guitarist/vocalist Eric Eisenberg, and drummer Kevin Werkheiser. They soon added Roger That Houston frontman Jason Ei on lead vocals and guitar. After playing through the Northeastern United States, the band recorded a self-titled EP which was released in August 2001 by Double Decker Records (now Doppleganger).
