The Perfect Garden formed in 1988 in Dunedin by Aaron, Karen, Kieron Martin and Shane. Inspired by the British indie music scene, we were influenced by the look and the sound of the Jesus and Mary Chain, the Primitives, the Shop Assistants and Loop. Our ethos was partly in doing something different to what was happening in Dunedin at the time and to move away from the Flying Nun scene. We wore our leather trousers and polo necks with pride, and looked outwards towards England, C86, Sarah Records and Primal Scream, to combine jangle, drone rock and indie.
