Solomon "Sol" Ho'opi'i (no relation to slide guitarist Sol Ho'opi'i) and his brother Richard (Rick) became a vocal group through the singing and playing they did together at church and church gatherings, which lead to them performing as a group at hotels and taking part in a song contest. Sol and Rick formed their own group in 1968 called The Ho’onanea Serenaders, before deciding to name their duo after themselves.
