The Gustavs was formed in 2005 after the break-up of The Smilies. Spud and Russell left their previous band due to complications on who/what played bass. The Gustavs went onto be a lot more fruitful than The Smilies, who only ever managed a handful of demos. As Autumn 2005 approached, The Smilies were over, 2 bands were formed from this breakup, Anticop and The Gustavs. Ronan and Shorty formed Anticop, Spud and Russell formed The Gustavs. The original idea was a few joke theme songs about a shop called Gustav's in Moscow, inhabited by workers called Colin.
