The group was founded in 2002 with Kristen Hall (vocals, guitar) as a third member. Prior to Sugarland, Nettles performed with the groups Soul Miner's Daughter and Jennifer Nettles Band, Bush recorded two albums as part of the duo Billy Pilgrim, and Hall released two solo albums.
