He was introduced by actor Waheed Murad into Pakistan film industry and gained popularity when singer Ahmed Rushdi sang his compositions in such films as Armaan (1966 film) and Doraha (1967 film). He is now based in Canada. Sohail Rana was born in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, (then British) India, in the home of Urdu poets Mr.& Mrs.Rana Akbarabadi.
