The Athens, Ohio-based jam band the Snapdragons (singer/guitarist Noel Rockwood, bassist Jeff Pistana, and drummer Sean Furlong) formed in the late '80s. Although similar to other groups appearing at the time (not quite as poppy as the Spin Doctors nor as noodley as Phish, closer to the folk-poppy sound the Dave Matthews Band would later take into the charts), the Snapdragons jumped the gun a bit; signing to Atlantic Records, they released their self-titled debut in 1991, a year or two before bands like this started getting media exposure and airplay.
