Biography

The Dallas, Texas-based singer-songwriter Sarah Sellers, has a voice that’s silken but with swagger. Her phrasing and vocal melodies are steeped in classic R&B and soul, but her songwriting, and overall vibe, evokes the intrepid realm of soulful electro pop. In addition to her appearance on American Idol: Season 10, other career highlights include appearing on the same stages as Grammy Award-winning artists Paula Cole and Monica, and gracing stages from Brazil to New York City.

Sarah was born a natural musical talent. At the tender age of six, she was captivating her parents, and anyone who would listen, with her pristine angelic vocals and performance smarts. By age 12, she was writing original music and performing on a grander scale. Soon she found herself on American Idol and being pursued by record labels. But it would take moving away from a life in music for her to truly discover her musical gifts. Now she comes forth harnessing her talent on her own terms with a sensual and very personal electro soul-pop aesthetic.

“In the past, I let a lot of things keep me from doing what I wanted to do,” Sarah confides. “Things for me came to a breaking point: I had left music, had a corporate job and I was miserable. I kept hearing a voice that said ‘doing music is too hard,’ and finally I had the courage to silence it by putting in my two weeks resignation at my job and pursue music full time. It was the most liberating thing I’ve ever done.”

Her latest single, the smoldering “The Way You Love Me,” has garnered favorable reviews from indie tastemakers. It’s a dizzying track with the pent-up anticipation in the verses being released by a honey-dripping hook of a chorus. Sarah is currently putting finishing touches on a new body of work to be released in the summer of 2016.

Her new material retains what’s becoming a Sarah Sellers trademark of slow-burn electro grooves and haunting textures, but there’s an intriguing urgency and dark sensuality to tracks like “Gone Through Hell” and “Fuck It It’s Alright.” The more vigorous direction comes from painfully complex changes in her personal life. “These songs are truthful and emotionally raw. The overarching theme is of acceptance while letting yourself experience and move through heartbreak,” Sarah says.

These are high watermark tracks for an artist who only a few years ago was lost, working a corporate job far away from music and the business of Hollywood reality shows and record labels. In March 2013, Sarah decided to take the small step to get some new music headshots. Turns out the photographer’s brother was Josh Goode, a two-time Emmy Award-winning musician who is also a songwriter, producer, remixer, performer, and one of Dallas, Texas’s finest acoustic guitar players. Sarah and Josh began formally working together when Sarah received a call to open up for R&B princess Monica at the House Of Blues in front of 1,600 people. The duo went from no songs and an onstage deadline to nurturing her distinct electro soul-pop aesthetic.

In addition to her promising artist career, Sarah is an in-demand session singer, co-writer, jingle composer, and well-known food blogger (www.sarahsmusicalkitchen.com). It’s only been a couple of years but she’s profoundly reinventing herself, and is determined to do right by that talented six year old. “It is like coming full circle,” Sarah says. “I had to go through pain and disappointments to finally feel like myself. It’s amazing what can happen when you just start believing in yourself and put yourself out there.”
