Born in Zurich, Rolf Urs Ringger studied music while at middle school and at the conservatory in Zurich. He also visited the 1956 Darmstädt Ferienkurse. Ringger studied composition under the tutelage of Theodor W. Adorno and Hans Werner Henze in Naples, and undertook instruction in directing in Zurich from 1958 until 1962. He studied musicology and philosophy at the University of Zurich and graduated with a dissertation about Anton Webern.
