This song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers was written by lead singer Anthony Kiedis about his late friend and original guitarist for the Peppers, Hillel Slovak. Slovak had died in the previous year of a speedball overdose and was a great loss to the band, causing original drummer Jack Irons to leave because he couldn't handle being involved in something tied so closely to the memory of Slovak. This and many other songs over the course of the history of RHCP have made reference to or are dedicated to Slovak. This is a prime example of one of these songs.
