Biography

16*29 is the infamous collaborative tape between Atlanta rapper Playboi Carti and Philly rapper Lil Uzi Vert.

* Version 1
The concept of 16*29 was first conceived in 2017 following the release of Playboi Carti's debut mixtape "Playboi Carti" which had featured Lil Uzi Vert on both the songs "wokeuplikethis*" and "Lookin". A Snapchat post from Carti in September featuring the punk rock group "The Damned". The caption read "Carti Uzi Tape *Uzi Carti Tape* 16.29."

Multiple songs were created during these sessions, although only few were to release. The project was presumably put on the backburner late-2017 as Carti began to shift his focus onto his debut studio album "Die Lit" and Uzi focused more on their debut album Luv Is Rage 2.

The first single for their tape, "Bankroll" had been released on February 20, 2018 by the producer DP Beats following the song leaking that same month. Although the song had never been officially released on 16*29, the song was put on DP's album "DPONTHEBEAT VOL 3" as the 6th track.

Two other 16*29 era tracks were also released in 2018 on Carti's album, with "Shoota" and "Home (KOD)" releasing on May 11. Uzi had ended up being cut from the final version of Home. From this point on, 16*29 had presumably been scrapped.

* Version 2
Carti and Uzi began to work together again in 2019 during the sessions for their albums Whole Lotta Red and Eternal Atake. On August 23, 2021, Uzi confirmed the highly anticipated collab album “16*29” with Playboi Carti had been intended to release.

During these sessions, Uzi and Carti recorded roughly 40 songs in London together as said by Uzi themself on Adin Ross' livestream on February 18, 2022. However, Uzi also stated that nobody has the files to those songs not even them themselves, making it very unlikely that these songs will ever surface.

By late 2020, Carti and Uzi became less frequent collaborators as Carti put more focus into releasing his 2nd studio album Whole Lotta Red.

* Version 3
Carti and Uzi began working together again in 2021 during the sessions for Narcissist and Pink Tape. On August 23rd of that year, Uzi confirmed the existence of a third iteration of 16*29 and previewed his song "No Brain" which had featured Carti, although only several adlibs from Carti had been played and none of Carti's verse had been played. The song "Too Hot" featuring Lil Uzi Vert had also been said to have appeared on a track listing to Narcissist before the album had been scrapped.

On the March 18, 2023 Uzi further confirmed the existence of 16*29 via an Instagram story reading "Me and my luv about 2 take over the world" while tagging Carti in it. The song "Pass It" with a rerecorded Uzi verse was also intended to appear onto a final track list for Pink Tape but was cut from the album last minute after Carti requested for its removal from Pink Tape. Despite this, the song was accidentally posted onto YouTube in place of "Patience" featuring Don Toliver on June 30, but was fixed hours later.

The song "Vetements Jeans" which had been intended for Pink Tape had later been taken by Carti for his album "I AM MUSIC" in late 2024. The song was first previewed by DJ Swamp Izzo before a version of the song from the Narcissist sessions had leaked. The song had since been confirmed to have been scrapped from the final project.

Carti and Uzi are still actively collaborating and have been seen alongside Kanye West.
