He subsequently became an oral and maxillo-facial surgeon in Oxford, but had a consuming interest in music from his youth. At various times he studied piano, harmony, counterpoint and orchestration under Dr. Reginald Johnson and, later, piano under Vivian Langrish and Ruth Harte.
