Biography

Nick Huggins is a guitar player and singer-songwriter who works, by day, as a sound engineer and producer. Formerly a guitarist for folk-pop group Ruby's Grace, Huggins later formed a band called Touch Typist with brother Simon 'Tig' Huggins on programming/treatments and drummer Mark Gretton.

As a solo artist, Huggins has released two albums — 2007's Shipwreck and 2011's Five Lights. (The latter was released with a deluxe package including a booklet of Huggins' writing and a cassette tape of extended guitar pieces, collectively titled 'Five Lights on Port Philip Bay'.) Influenced by figures including Lou Harrison, Einsturzende Neubauten and John Cage, Huggins is known to experiment with automatic composition techniques and tape manipulation in his production, as well as creating several homemade synthesisers to accompany his plaintive vocal and cleanly plucked guitar lines.

As a producer and recording engineer, Huggins has worked with Australian musicians including Kid Sam, Otouto and Oscar + Martin — all of whom have released records on the record label he co-founded called Two Bright Lakes — as well as Whitley, Mick Turner and many others.

Huggins currently plays samples and treatments in abstract disco outfit Speed Painters and performs both solo and with band around his home town of Melbourne, Australia.
