Born in London on the 11th of December 1958, Merv is the son of virtuoso clarinetist Gervase de Peyer. He moved to the US to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. After graduating with a degree in Performance and Composition in 1983, he moved to New York City to pursue a career as a jazz pianist. Shortly after, he started working as a studio musician and played or/and programmed on records and jingles until coming to the attention of Cameo producer and frontman Larry Blackmon.
