The group MELLAA (Music Encompasses Life Love And Ascension) was formed on the campus of Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. in 1977. Created in the classroom of the SU jazz institute headed by the late great educator Alvin Batiste. Batiste has taught others like Randy Jackson (American Idol), his brother Herman, Donald Harrison, Henry Butler, Charlie Singleton (Cameo), and Woodie Douglas (Spirit).
