Mavi’s sophomore album Laughing so Hard It Hurts addresses topics such as addiction, the loss of his uncle and cousin, fear of changing after growing in popularity, past relationships, love, and his girlfriend’s decision to have an abortion. Throughout the album, there are also cyclical themes of death and rebirth. Initially, the rapper was set to release Shango, a project named after the Yoruba deity of thunder, virility, anger, dance, and the drums, but eventually he ended up shelving it.
