Biography

Forging a one-of-a-kind career path, Kono Michi, Japanese for “This Path,” is the alter-ego of Juilliard-trained violinist, Michi Wiancko. Kono Michi’s latest album, 9 Death Haiku, was described by The Strad magazine as “intriguing and exquisitely beautiful… music that crosses the pop-classical barrier” and was selected by Playback:STL online music magazine as one of the "Top 30 CD's of the Decade."

Kono Michi’s original compositions for string quartet, vocals, drums and bass have been heard on WYNC and are broadcast regularly on the BBC 1, 3, and 6 Music. She has performed in BAM Café, Drom, Barbés, Pianos, Merkin Hall, Thalia Theater at Symphony Space, and the World Café Live in Philadelphia, and recently toured Scotland and England, including several performances in London.

As a violinist, Michi made her solo debut with the New York Philharmonic and her recital debut in Carnegie’s Weill Hall. She was featured on the cover of Symphony Magazine and was described by Gramophone as “an alluring soloist with heightened expressive and violinistic gifts.” Michi has performed on the soundtracks for numerous films including Mr. Holland’s Opus, Everything is Illuminated, and the upcoming Betty Ann Waters, featuring Hilary Swank. She recently finished composing her very first score for the short film Storm Up The Sky, written and directed by Jonathan Kauffman.

Stay tuned for the upcoming release of Kono Michi’s second full-length album, Animal in the Sky, to be released on the Scottish indie label Shark Batter Records (sharkbatter.com)
