There are at least four bands whose name is Koan.
In date order these are Koan as an ethnic ambient duo from Russia, the mid and near east influenced Koan which released an album on D.O.R. and Koan as post grundge band from Switzerland.
There is also a Koan coming from France, a ritualistic dark ambient band, who's date of creation is unknown.
1995

koan are two guys, daniel roeth and william grey, both based in Moscow, russia. daniel spinned vinyls since 1993 in local clubs acid and hard techno mainly. in 1995 he met william who allready had some experience in music making and sampler technologies. together they found two projects, koan for downtempo and vacuum stalkers for more progressive/tech stuff. daniel left the dj carier and gone with all he’s forces into the studio work, william takes on himself the producer’s stuff.
during 1995-2005 they made a lot of tracks, some of them dissapeared in time bubbles and some of them was released and had a lot of success in local moscow parties. the real success came after release their first album koan – talking stones (otium net label 2005) and the next one koan - the signs (otium net label 2005). some well known labels like iboga/sofa beats released their tracks, daniel resurrect he’s dj performances as chillout dj. their music in clubs and open air chill areas bring people a lot of joy. in the end of 2005 they have met trancexplorer crew and the result of this is here in this peace of work. two moon butterflies takes you deep down into the deepest places of your soul, makes you feel like a butterfly who need to go up, to the light, to the moon.
1999
The mid and near east influenced Koan's music crosses genres, ideas and cultures - Persian, Punjabi, African and other ethnic instruments and styles are blended with western bass lines, guitars and drums. Members were Martin Lee Stephenson, tabla exponent Kuljit Bhanra, Persian music expert Christoph Bracher, drummer Lol Gellor and singers Faye Rochelle and Anita Masih.
2004
Koan is a post grundge band from switzerland. Reborn in October, 2005, from the ashes of the previous group Skiamazzi Notturni. Guitarist and founder of the band, Marcello Cantù, guitarist Sacha Galli and singer Pierre-Michel Dettori, both formerly of the band VersiVari, bass guitarist Paolo Maspoli, and drummer Victor Fumagalli make up Koan. The band proposes a genre of music defined as grunge-cross-core. The road starts from grunge and melts into core, therefore enclosing every musical influence that have accompanied each member of the formation through their different musical experiences and personal development.

The French Koan is a very short lived side project of Zahaah, a not really well known French musician, who's most known from his involvement in Himinbjørg, a black/viking metal band, who in the Koan project, is aided by Christophe Pion-Chozenon. The band released only one album, "Frontiers", in 2000, and then split-up. Koan plays ritualistic dark ambient, oftenly aided by clean and screeching vocals.
