He was part of The Rubber Band together with Courtland Pickett and John Wyker. Later on hooked up with fellow keyboardist Ed Sanford to form The Sanford-Townsend Band. They are considered a one-hit wonder, scoring a hit single in 1977 with "Smoke from a Distant Fire".
