John Stiles is a poet from rural Nova Scotia who lived in Toronto for eight years doing a string of meaningless jobs telemarketting and selling door-to-door, while occasionally being kidnapped and travelling with a band called the smalls. Poverty stricken, cut off from friends and lost in Toronto he invented an "in rural dialect" poetry voice at local open mics which was made into a celebrated book of poetry and a movie, Scouts are Cancelled.
