Born in 1945 in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Fizer-who has lived in and out of Berkeley for the past 40 years-says he never felt his hometown was right for him. "I knew there was life on the other side of the mountain," he says. "It was so narrow-minded and oppressive (where I grew up)."
