João Martins was born in 1977 and studied saxophone in his teenage years. At a mid-point of his formal musical studies he started experimenting with non-classical music: some jazz, rock and popular music, and some contemporary and avant-garde academic stuff. He started playing freely improvised music in 1998 in a project called Ohmalone.
