Biography

Anoushka Shankar is an Indian sitar player and the daughter of Ravi Shankar; the master sitar player who taught George Harrison of the Beatles how to play the Sitar. Jeff Lynne is the lead singer & founder of ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) who became a personal friend of George Harrison; was a member of Harrison's Travelling Wilburys and produced George Harrison's last album, "Brainwashed".

The musicians Anoushka Shankar and Jeff Lynne performed "Inner Light" together during the Concert for George event at the Royal Albert Hall, London, England, UK on November 29th, 2002 (the anniversary of George Harrison's passing). Anoushka plays the sitar as Jeff sings and plays the acoustic guitar. There is an ensemble of Indian musicians who play assorted instruments behind Jeff and Anoushka which replicates what is heard on the original single, "Inner Light" which was recorded by George while he was still in the Beatles.

Note: The story has been told that an admirer sent George a copy of the Tao and flagged some relevant pages. According to Wikipedia, it's a rendering or translation of the Tao Te Ching's "Viewing the Distant". Also, "The Beatles' recording of this song features lead vocals from Harrison and brief backing vocals from John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The instrumental track was recorded in Mumbai, India, during the sessions for Harrison's Wonderwall Music (a soundtrack album), during January 1968."
