Bandleader, composer, recording artist, producer and educator Ian Dogole was born in Philadelphia where he studied piano and guitar and developed an early interest in jazz, especially Miles, Coltrane and Blue Note recording artists like Art Blakey and Lee Morgan. He was always drawn to those jazz artists who incorporated music from other genres— Miles, Alice Coltrane— an interest which eventually lead to a major in Ethnomusicology from Brown University.
