Biography
When Ginger Leigh and Sarah Dashew first sang together at an all-female jam session at the Rhythm House in Austin one night it was like one of those cake mixes where you just add water and end up with a delicious treat - it was instant vocal chemistry and positively yummy. They formed a band, at first called The Ginger and Sarah Band, and later renamed Vera Takes the Cake.
The two had both released solo recordings before that night, that "historic" night, when they became a duo. Since then, they've released Do What You Will and Vera Takes the Cake while touring and writing even more songs. Ginger and Sarah's music combines blues, funky-pop-lyrical-rock, jazz, and some spoken word. Their lyrics are poetic and their voices lush, bold, and moving. Their originals are just that: original, inventive and unexpected.
Besides Sarah Dashew and Ginger Leigh, the Vera Takes the Cake usually includes Jason McKenzie on drums, Sheben on bass, and sometimes George Devore on lead guitar. Their second album, Vera Takes the Cake, features local musicicans like Glover Gill, Ephraim Owens, and Lonelyland's Mike Longoria.
Ginger comes from a family of musicians stretching back several generations and considers songwriting a familiar language. Sarah started singing gospel in college and developed a passion for music at that time. Sarah describes her life in Austin as landlocked, because she grew up on a sailboat. However both comment on their love for Austin as the best place to nurture creative music and arts. Artists such as Ani Difranco, Phoebe Snow, Bette Midler, Prince, Paul Simon, Me'shell Ndegeocello, and Dave Matthews head their list of musical influences.
