It was first recorded in early 1963 by American singer Chuck Jackson (though no recording was released until the album "Mr. Everything" in 1964) and in April 1963 by American soul singer Tommy Hunt (with Burt Bacharach arranging and conducting). The version by English singer Dusty Springfield was a chart success in the UK in the summer of 1964.
