His school choir master discovered his singing talents, characterised by a rich powerful voice which extended beyond two octaves, and David was encouraged by his choir master to take up traditional opera singing. However, the British pop rock scene of the swinging sixties proved too tempting, and David achieved almost instant success with his first recording, "Dear Mrs Applebee", in 1966.
