It was written by vocalist Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein in 1978 about/for the actress and model Brooke Shields, who starred in the movie Pretty Baby that same year. Although the song was written in the 70’s, its lyrics contain many references to 60’s pop culture, including but not limited to references to the 1962 film Lolita and the song “Incense and Peppermints” by Strawberry Alarm Clock.
