In 2011 Big John and Brandy Bates began co-writing in a dark alt-folk-rock style they call “Americana Noir” (a western offshoot of dark cabaret). Their sound shares stylistic elements with 16 Horsepower, the Decemberists and Devotchka and Brandy has developed a strong female perspective with her rustic lyrics, “soulful screams” (What’s Up Magazine, Bellingham) and “eerily whispery vocals” (Music Examiner, Toronto).
