Founded in late 2011 by guitarist Josh Curl, Asyla began as a melodic death metal act, but under a different name. As time progressed, members changed. With new members came a new sound, and new potential. Josh recruited local guitarist Keith Smith as the second guitarist in Asyla. Keith had found relative fame on youtube for his originals, and brought just the right attitude for Asyla. The two later brought drummer Dakota Maksimovitch into the mix.
