Alinian was born in 2001 at the initiative of Sebastian and Radu Grosu. The two brought former schoolmate Septimiu Turcu to play the bass. The boys played a mixture of rock, medieval, Romanian folklore and heavy metal music. The memebers of the band consider that such fusion of styles could be described by using the general concept of progressive rock. When playing live, the organizers tend to characterize the band's style as folk-rock, medieval rock or art-rock.
