Aleka's Attic were a band formed in 1987-88 by the actor River Phoenix. The band's line up changed over the years- the original members were River Phoenix (vocals/guitar) Rain Phoenix (vocals) Josh Mckay (bass), Josh Greenbaum (drums) and Tim Hankins (viola). The band were offered a two year development deal with Island records in 1988. They released two tracks, 'Across The Way' appeared on the 1989 PETA benefit album 'Tame Yourself' and in 1996 'Note To A Friend' appeared on another benefit album, 'In Defence Of Animals volume II'. The band also lent a track, 'Too Many Colors', to the soundtrack of Gus Van Sant's 'My Own Private Idaho' (1991) a film starring Phoenix.
Aleka's Attic had success on the college circuit in the early 90's recieving significant air play on college radio stations across the states followed by a tour of the country's east coast. The band mainly focused on playing non-profit charity events, raising awareness of environmental issues and animal rights- causes. Lead singer/songwriter River Phoenix also activeley promoted through his media exposure as an actor. Flea (bassist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers), on occasion, played bass for the band and Phoenix appeared on his friend, and Flea's band mate, John Frusciante's solo album 'Smile From The Streets You Hold'. Two tracks, 'Height Down' and 'Well, I've Been' featured Phoenix, with the latter being dedicated to him. At the time of River Phoenix's death in 1993 the band (with line up changes) were putting together their first album 'Never Odd Or Even' aka 'Zero'. The album was very near to completion but, as of yet, seems to be far from close to release due to three musicians refusing to sign artistic License forms. In 1997 REM singer Michael Stipe (and close friend of River Phoenix) bought the rights to all Aleka's Attic's demo's from Island records.
The band has earned some-what of a cult following due to the internet and Phoenix's on-going fan base. Last year members of the band set up a myspace page in order to allow their fans to listen to some of the available tracks of 'Never Odd Or Even'.
