YOKE (Cate Le Bon, Race Horses)

A new collaborative project between Cate le Bon and Meilyr Jones of Race Horses playing synth led psychedelic tunes. Much is known of their separate endeavors and achievements including Cate’s work with Gruff Rhys, The Super Furry Animals & Neon Neon before releasing her debut album Me Oh My to critical praise in 2009:

"Her odd, beautiful songs burrow like furtive woodland creatures to a safe nest lodged firmly between tradition and individual talent. Quirky psychedelia, rough guitars and spectral shanties are drawn together by her cool, Welsh Nico vocal." NME - 8/10

…and of Race Horses whose debut album Goodbye Falkenberg “is an off-kilter masterpiece, irrerverant, unadulterated and well worth a listen” (DiS 8/10). However, little is known of this new ensemble other than a sure bet for mesmeric synth led psychedelia. With no web presence of yet, I can only direct you to a video of a marvelous Radio 1 session Yoke recorded with Bethan Elfyn last December.

FFO: The Phantom Band, Austra, Finders Keepers & B-Music Records.

H. HAWKLINE

Cardiff-based musician Huw Evans has been playing in several bands such as Cate Le Bon’s for a while, and is credited with assisting with some recorded Islet output, but only under his H. Hawkline moniker may his efforts be truly appreciated.

His music can sometimes be described as “instrumental psychedelic spooky gypsy-inspired folk”, and H. Hawkline’s solo debut album A Cup Of Salt (Shape Records, Dec 2010) is largely along these lines. Beautifully constructed and well layered, it’s a wonderful krautrock-inspired mix of acoustic-led weird folk and driving psychedelic sounds.

However, sometimes Huw creates more vocal & catchy psych-pop. A new album The Strange Uses Of Ox Gall has recently been released which Huw says sounds a bit like Arthur Russell/Syd Barrett/Michael Yonkers. It’s available on very limited (150) 12" vinyl, half of which are deluxe versions featuring a linocut print done by Huw himself and a free EP called RUN ZATOPEK RUN.

Whichever face of H. Hawkline Huw decides to show doesn't really matter, they're all bloody good.

FFO: Brian Jonestown Massacre, Beyond The Wizards Sleeve, Velvet Underground, Nuggets.

BACKYARDS

This young Leeds based post-rock / folk-tronica outfit will be opening the show. The 2011 Futuresound Competition finalists have shimmering guitars, swooning violin, driving bass and massive drums interwoven with thoughtful, hook-laden vocals.

'an exciting prospect as already there's so much potential in the current set-up. In any case, a brilliant end to an all-round beast of a night.'
Tim Hearson - Leeds Music Scene

"The live show was intense, musically diverse and incredibly engaging. Go see this band." - Will Woodward, The Blue Walrus
