I was gonna drop by and harass for knowing about Mandy, Indiana before me. I just found it and fell in love. Seems you are working through my list, I've decided to add more as I discover more music on end of year lists. I'm gonna check Montañera since you've been playing it recently too

Yeah since I'm listening to the full albums it's a bit of a project so I'm working my way through the list. Intrigued by what I've heard so far though, I'll report more in full after I've listened to some more.

Hiya pal! I noticed BADBADNOTGOOD so obviously you can handle a little jazz. Then noted Natalia LaFourcade so you are open to a bit of Spanish. So I think you might like Rita Payés. Her album, Como La Piel, is my favorite. Her mother, Elisabeth Roma, is the featured guest and guitarist. Rita sings and plays trombone.

You can certainly "note" my Lafourcade plays, she was my favorite album of last year and always hits my top 5 when she drops an album. And a little jazz can really hit the spot but I don't know where to begin sometimes with exploration. It's a world of music less covered by the usual suspects of music reviewers. I'm playing Como La Piel now and it certainly sounds warm and inviting, nothing quite sounds as good as brass instruments through my speakers and I love the sensual vocals and the brushes on the drums. Opening track is a stunner!

Hello a-Me-with-a-You! I saw that you got a nice taste of music and thought that you'd maybe like our music as well. We are three girls from the forests of Sweden and we are going to record our very first album in Woodstock this summer! We would love if you checked out this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc_SKuEZm0o ! Let us know what you think (it's much appreciated) by commenting the video, and also check out our cover of 'Kathy's Song' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44kjqZUC5PU that we got the chance to play live for Paul Simon! I went to three shows in a row (Berlin, Utrecht, Tilburg), all were awesome! I hope I can make it to at least one of the shows next year. :)

I really like their new album, especially One Sunday Morning, and live are they the best. Looking forward seeing them again in November, but you will see them before me....

I have no idea what it's from, but it's what I feel like sometimes when I'm listening to music. I just saw your comments on the Whole Love songs when I was listening to it today (for the first time), and 100% agreed. Yay Wilco!

The 80s are definitely over-referenced in music. And fashion. Where a lot of artists completely embrace the 80s, I think Emmy more gives it a simple nod. I suppose "stripped down" was the wrong choice of words, but it seemed stripped down compared to the album. I love the live sound that each band has. It's always interesting to see if they try to duplicate the album sound, or they go off in a completely different direction. Blind Pilot always has these massively creative ideas (i.e. their bike tour), but they're so subtle about it that you'd never guess. Are they ever going to come out with a new album? I have their laundromat sessions, which I prefer due to their use of the banjo. I love that version of Needle & the Damage Done. Jack White did a brilliant job of capturing Laura's voice in the Blues Run the Game EP, but this version of the song works better. It just seems hollower and more weary, which goes well with the song. Love it.

I'm a bit more sympathetic toward Cassandra than Iris, but that's just based on personal biases. I've always view Cassandra as a tragic heroine of sorts, whereas Iris is just the goody two-shoes golden child with her rainbows and whatnot...that is assuming that these songs are based off of the mythology. I haven't paid enough attention lyrically to make an accurate assessment. LOVING Woods' daytrotter session. With the stripped-down sound, I can hear the vocals better. It's hard to decide which sound I like more.

I canNOT stop listening to Woods. Thank you for the recommendation, because you've gotten me hooked. I can't remember where, but I feel like I've heard that quote before. I like it better in the context of the album than wherever I first heard it. It has rich imagery and multiple layers, kind of like the CD. A Woman, a woman...etc and Paper Forest is definitely one of my favorites too. Cassandra is a rather stand-out track. Virtue ends on a rather low note, but I'm pretty sure I like it. I'm eager to hear what you think. Completely different sound from First Love, which almost seemed purposely lo-fi. I'm going to have to give it another listen...whenever I can stop repeating Woods. Which may never happen.

We should have settled the terms of what cover means :) You previously said "how some songs are barely able to be called covers if there's little left from the original instrumentation". I agree with you with that but as a cover is a new performance of a song and as we all know it will never be the same it should carry its performer vision of it. Even with some changes in the original instrumentation. This is a really interesting topic, its a pity that my english sucks. Wonder what people would say about this, is there any forum about this on last? I do love as well a lot of the efforts on the I'm Not There OST. The Jeff Tweedy's version of "Twist of Fate" is incredible! I like it very much as well. The Cat Power is really good as well and really catchy as well maybe because of her bluesy voice. Malkmus did a great job as well, as usual. Thanks for that, because at the end I got to listen the I'm Not There OST again and in this revisitation I got to listen differently this tracks.

Thanks for adding me! To me the best Dylan cover is Jimi Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower. Many reason, but I just have 1000 characters :) There are another two that i like but they are really different. This two are special to me because they are from albums that I like as well & they are pretty coherent in the album. George Harrison cover of If Not For You (11th studio album - New Morning) from All Things Must Pass & PJ Harvey cover of Highway '61 Revisited (6th studio album - Highway 61 Revisited) from her fantastic album Rid of Me. Did you mean that or the other wway around? Did you mean the covers that Dylan did of songs?

(3) But I'm with you. I'd kill for a guitar that sounds like something other than "metallic". I suppose in the end you can always fuck with the levels in order to replicate it. Do you write music at all? I bet you could record some badass tracks. I'm struggling to think of even ONE decent drummer in a working band. Most of the artists I listen to have a really stripped-down sounds...bereft of drummers. Marcus Mumford does a decent job of covering the guitar/percussion sections...but I don't think he's necessarily "good" per se. I think if you notice them (i.e. they stand out), then they're doing their job wrong. I don't know if Noah and the Whale have a new drummer for Last Night on Earth or if they just amped the drum up. Either way, I don't think I like it. Have you heard their new CD yet?

(2) My friend has a '57 (or '56) Gibson acoustic. It did "warm" effortlessly. I think in order to get that sound, you're going to have to invest in it (e.g. buy an expensive vintage). Or get really lucky and stumble upon one in a pawn shop. The guitar on the ENTIRE album of Picaresque sounds out-of-tune to me, but that's probably because it was recorded in a church and the space messes with the sound. Roman Candle was recorded in a basement, so there's probably a similar effect. The tab is posted onto Ultimate Guitar, but I don't always trust them. Their "capo 3, reg. tuning" version of Skinny Love is universally accepted as "THE version" but it never sounds right to me. That website is full of crackheads if you ask me. What kind of electric do you have?

(1) If I were stuck with one song for the rest of my life, I'd pick one I hated. This way, I'll spend the rest of my days lusting after all the awesome songs I can't listen to rather than hating a song I used to love. Sometimes a live version outshines the studio version. Imagine singing a (nearly) 7-minute long song over and over again. It would be near impossible to sing it with the same emotions by take #10. Dude. I still listen to awful music. It blew my mind the day I discovered that music existed that DIDN'T play on the radio. Now it blows my mind that people actually still listen to the radio.
