Of course, there's the danger that the Swifties might realize that this is actually a lot better than Ms. Swift's oeuvre - they'll see the quality that hasn't exactly been consistent from her. (In fairness, Swift's problem has been that she's put out so much content so quickly, she hasn't been able to exercise much quality control, to really hone her stuff. Contrast that with the Blue Nile, who were very slow and methodical with their releases - far more consistent quality, but just not as much to listen to. Still, Ms. Swift might learn a thing or two from them.) Anyway, the write-up I saw suggested it was an ex-bf who got her into this band, but I semi-suspect the fact that Hats dropped in 1989 played some role here.

I think streaming has definitely changed the game. I've seen so many artists drip drop their albums out a track at a time, an ep at a time, before the actual album hits. Peter Gabriel did this with his last release and I haven't listened to it much because I got tired of the singles every week. I like to see the whole picture. And then you have all the different versions and variants, like Pokemon cards. I miss the days of Deluxe or special anniversary releases.

Definitely agree - more of an album than a single guy. What made rock music generally great was the moment in the 60s when bands like the Beatles and Beach Boys embraced the idea of the album as cohesive, complete work of art. Prior, albums were just scattershot compilations of singles. But the album format brings in an element of discipline, thematic unity, where even the sequence of songs is guided by artistic choice. In that respect, the Spotify revolution is a regression. To be sure, there's nothing wrong with compilations, soundtracks (those are often album-like), or putting your digital player on random - I do that all the time, say, while driving. But the albums are foundational, and they'll make the singles of better quality. Most of the time, and probably one reason I stuck with locally stored mp3's rather than streaming, is that I prefer to sequence whole albums while I'm working.

i dont actually think there is that danger. swifties don't listen to her music while secretly wishing that they were listening to 80s alt-pop. its very apples to oranges.

Stranger things have happened. But even putting taste aside, that's often one of the main ways people find out about bands and even genres they might otherwise never get exposed to. Even in my case, I only found out about the Blue Nile because of the Pure Bathing Culture/Ben Gibbard recreation of "Hats." I still love PBC, but now I also like Blue Nile. So it's not necessarily a zero-sum thing.

Most beautiful band I've heard in a long time. Paul Buchanan gets my soul like no other near-80 year old man

I discovered them kind of accidentally. A dream pop band I like called Pure Bathing Culture did a full cover of Hats, for the Turntable Kitchen series. Ben Gibbard, of Death Cab/Postal Service fame, played and even sang on the album. So of course, I had to check the original source material. I don't know if the Blue Nile ever said anything publicly about what PBC and Gibbard did, but I like to think they'd be proud of the results.

A shame they didn't get more attention in the US when Hats hit. But I suppose they're in good company. Stuff that's popular today is quite often forgotten about within a few years, but stuff like this, more under the radar stuff, has a way of sticking around.

I can't believe how much this clicks with me. It reminds me a little of Ghosteen in a way.

I get that. At least with "Hats," there's an element of nostalgia, regret for a lost past, but with a very urban locale. This is the soundtrack of driving home alone, to a small apartment where you live alone, in the middle of the night, among skyscrapers as far as the eye can see.

I love such cases! You come upon a new band or singer, start listening to them, and find out that they not only have a distinct and unique 'voice' which you like a lot, but also that their discography is small and brilliant -- it doesn't drag on and on, for decades, to the point that it's totally obvious that everything they do is a rehash (and re-rehash usually) of what has already been done by them in the past. Four albums is so exactly enough for "The Blue Nile" (probably could even make it three:).

Not convinced I agree that it should be three albums, haha, but I suggest checking out Paul Buchanan's solo album as well. To me, that's even more precious than The Blue Nile.

PS: I very much understand though how some particular sound or atmosphere can be pleasant unconditionally so to speak. I e.g. can put any Paul van Dyke album at any time and feel good, even though it is basically the same music over and over again.) And for that matter, many people can manage the whole "Cure" discography.. :D

no wonder Matty Healy said "Hats" is his favorite record, you can hear The Blue Nile influences all other the place in the 1975's songs
