My first PJ Harvey album, and still my favorite after exploring the rest of her discography. Every single track is memorable and impactful. Unfathomably incredible performance, songwriting, instrumentation, everything. Life-changing is an understatement.

Hey there. Let England Shake is the only album by PJ Harvey I've listened to. I listened to it mostly when it came out back in 2011. The songs are so apparently well-written that you think that you were able to crack them quick and there is no value in re-listening them. That couldn't be farther from the truth. I am re-listening the album write now paying closer attention to the lyrics, and I just can't explain how powerful and emotional they are. I took a look into your charts and saw that White Chalk is far ahead in terms of scrobbles from Let England Shake. I am probably going to dip my toe into that one next in my exploration of PJ's discography.

I love them both! They are both full of complex, emotional songs. Let England Shake is much more sonically experimental for sure, containing more diverse instrumentation and variation in rhythm. White Chalk is more uniform in terms of instrumentation and rhythm, taking on a slow, gloomy piano rock style the entire time, but IMO is much more raw and definitely more personal. I listen to White Chalk more often because I usually opt for its emotional stimulation, but that doesn’t stop Let England Shake from being a whole masterpiece.

#144 P4K. I don't think I really understood the context of the album, but it was great to listen to. Didn't hit me as hard as I thought it might.

It's been forever since I've listened to this, forgot how emotional and overwhelmingly amazing it is.

So, what happened was about eighteen months ago I thought about writing a review of P J Harvey's 'Let England Shake'. Then I got distracted with moving and a new job and by the time I got back to 'Let England Shake' I realised a review wasn't going to it. The result is an essay in three parts, riffing around the themes of 'Let England Shake'. Enjoy! http://eponymistuk.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/the-sombrer-opacities-of-gloom-p-j.html
